TSN’s Rod Smith Recognized with Excellence in Sports Broadcasting Award By Sports Media Canada

Toronto, ON (October 16, 2012) – TSN congratulates Rod Smith, who was honoured with the Excellence in Sports Broadcasting award at today’s Sports Media Canada awards ceremony for his aquatics play-by-play during the LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES. Smith hosts the 6 p.m. ET weekday edition of SPORTSCENTRE on TSN, Canada's most-watched sports news and information show.
This past summer Smith called some of the biggest events from London 2012, including the showdowns between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, Missy Franklin’s gold medal performances, and Canada’s first medal of the Games as Jennifer Abel and Émilie Heymans won bronze in women’s synchronized diving.
Overall, Smith delivered play-by-play for three of the Top 10 most-watched events from the Games including swimming: women’s 50m freestyle final (#4); swimming: men’s 4x100m medley relay final (#6); and swimming: men’s 1500m freestyle final (#7).
“Rod’s best in class play-by-play and trademark powerful voice have made him one of the most recognizable broadcasters in Canadian sports,” said Stewart Johnston, President, TSN. “He did an outstanding job calling marquee events from the Summer Games and couldn’t be more deserving of this award. Sports Media Canada also recognized National Post sports columnist Bruce Arthur, a regular TSN Radio and TSN THE REPORTERS contributor, for his work covering the Games. In addition, longtime Edmonton Sun sports columnist Terry Jones was honoured with a career achievement award while the Edmonton Journal’s Ed Kaiser was recognized for his photography from London 2012. Sports Media Canada also named True North Sports & Entertainment’s Mark Chipman as its Executive of the Year.
