TORONTO (May 16, 2013) – Discovery’s MIGHTY PLANES takes off for a spectacular second season on planes that soar to faraway places on astounding missions. Premiering Sunday, June 9 at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET/PT with back-to-back, all-new episodes, the high-octane, high-energy, and high-altitude thrill ride spotlights the individuals that work to make each flight a success. From pre-flight planning to post landing wrap-up, MIGHTY PLANES catches all the action, just as it happens! Season 2 begins on megamogul’s Donald Trump’s corporate jet – where all that glitters really is gold. The newly refurbished Boeing 757 is a handsome, luxurious aircraft, and an integral part of how Trump oversees his global empire. Then, in the next episode, viewers ascend with the C-17 Globemaster – the newest, most-cargo aircraft to enter the U.S. airlift force – on missions over the mountains of Alaska and from the South Pacific to California.
MIGHTY PLANES explores the art and science of aviation. From preparation, loading, and take off, through the journey, and to the landing and unloading, viewers experience the high-stakes and high-stress jobs through the eyes and lives of the characters that make it all happen. Featuring the genius of flight technology with the aid of high-end CGI, shot in HD, and recorded in 5.1 surround sound, MIGHTY PLANES finished #1 among all Canadian non-sports speciality networks in its first season Sunday Presents timeslot, reaching more than 6.1 million Canadians over the entire series according to BBM.
Highlights from the second season of MIGHTY PLANES include:
MIGHTY PLANES: “Trump”
Sunday, June 9 at 8 p.m. ET/PT
In the season premiere, viewers hop aboard Donald Trump’s corporate jet for a private tour of the newly refurbished Boeing 757. The former 230-seat passenger jet now sumptuously caters to the world’s most-famous real estate mogul, boasting such luxuries as plush leather couches, gleaming mahogany finishes, gold-threaded linens in the master bedroom, as well as 24 karat gold-plated sinks, faucets, light fixtures, and seatbelts, not to mention a 57-inch flat screen TV. MIGHTY PLANES flies with Trump and his flight crew on a transatlantic mission to the U.K. for a speech and pit-stop at his new golf course in Scotland. Fog, runway curfews, security sweeps and a missing engine cowling are just some of the challenges threatening the jet’s upcoming flight as Captain Dunkin races against time to get “The Donald” to his destination on time and in style.
MIGHTY PLANES: “C17 Globemaster”
Sunday, June 9 at 9 p.m. ET/PT
The C-17 Globemaster is the newest, most-flexible cargo aircraft to enter the U.S. airlift force. The C-17 specializes in quick delivery of troops and all types of cargo, from helicopters to humanitarian aid, not only to military bases but directly to conflict zones and disaster areas. Able to land and take off on short, rough runways, it’s as nimble as it is large. MIGHTY PLANES follows two different Globemasters – on missions over the mountains of Alaska and from the South Pacific to California – all the better to demonstrate this plane’s truly mighty mastery. It’s a gruelling, round-the-clock, real-world mission as the C-17 lives up to its name – delivering personnel, supplies, and equipment to literally anywhere in the world.
MIGHTY PLANES continues with all-new back-to-back episodes on Wednesday, June 12 and features “Omega” at 9 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT and “NOAA” at 10 p.m. ET/11 p.m. PT. The series finishes its six-episode run with back-to-back episodes on Sunday, June 16 with “Sofia” at 8 p.m. ET/PT and “Blue Angels” at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The MIGHTY PLANES interactive experience on discovery.ca returns with exclusive content including deleted scenes, cool facts and figures on Season 2’s six planes with the MIGHTY PLANES infographic, and remarkable photos and videos of all six shoots.
MIGHTY PLANES is produced by Exploration Production Inc. (EPI) in association with Discovery Canada. Gemini-winner Kathryn Oughtred is the Executive Producer.
